The Premier Latino Community Organization in Southwestern Pennsylvania, encouraging education, communication, cooperation and celebration of our Latino heritage, language and culture.
Background and History
"Al Servicio de la Comunidad" was first started in 2002 by members of the Latino Catholic Community of the Diocese of Pittsburgh. It is an information fair, where invited groups and organizations distribute Spanish brochures and give one-on-one information on health, housing, education, finances, English as a second language, culture, and other important matters. Additionally, other materials are available which are printed in Spanish. Although under the umbrella of the Diocese, the event is not religious in nature and it is open to all, regardless of religious affiliation, gender, sexual orientation, cultural or ethnic background.
Entertainment and Community-Building
To create an atmosphere of community celebration, the fair features typical Latino food items from a variety of Latin American countries for sale, in addition to children's activities, door prizes, and ethnic decorations. Also, live music featuring traditional music is presented, as well as a DJ playing contemporary Latino music. Admission is free and mainly volunteers carry out the organization and implementation. The location for La Feria Pittsburgh had changed over the years, as we strived to find a venue that strikes a balance between accessibility, amenities, convenience and expenses. We have found such a venue in the University of Pittsburgh's William Pitt Union, where we have forged a mutually beneficial relationship that assures us the stability we had sought.
